Introduction

The following book is one of a series of four that are compiled by extracting news items from microfilmed copy of the New Era newspaper of Fort Smith, Arkansas which was published on a weekly basis.

In these pages one can almost feel the emotions that the settlers on the western frontier dealt with on a daily basis.

The items found in this newspaper date from October 8, 1863 to November 11, 1865. They describe day to day life in the Northwest Arkansas area from the viewpoint of the editor, Valentine Dell. It also includes many accounts of the various battles fought within the state of Arkansas, Texas and the Indian Territory.

Many of the battles and occurrences are very vividly described and as is common with newspapers of this era, are told from the prospective of the editor.

It is my hope that this work will help you to understand the effects of the Civil War on the general population of Northwest Arkansas during the Civil War Era.
